What does it mean?
Direct describes how you pay for primary care. You pay your primary care doctor directly as opposed to paying an insurance company that will pay your primary care doctor. Family physicians are one of the primary care specialties and we can take care of 90% of of a patient’s medical issues, including preventive and routine care. This includes women’s health care, pediatric care, wellness education, chronic disease management, procedures, and coordination of specialist care.
How does direct primary care work?
Patients pay a low monthly membership fee and in return get all of your routine primary care, greater access to care with longer times in front of the physician (the average insurance-based visit is 7 minutes long), shorter wait times, and same day or next day appointments. The doctor is available by internet chat, email, or phone. Low cost lab tests are available to members. Procedures, such as laceration repair, toenail removal, skin biopsy, etc., are included with your monthly member fee. Additionally, our fees can be seen before you make your appointment.
Why does it work?
The steady income from the membership fee allows the doctor to cap the total number of patients in their practice at a much lower number than doctors that take insurance. Since there are fewer patients to see, each patient gets more of the doctor’s time and the patient can be seen in a more timely manner.
